It may seem obvious,it may seem like a dumb question, but do you have an answer? Knowing your name isn’t enough to skim the surface of how deep that question goes. It has been stated and quoted many times. To thine own self be true! You can’t be true to what you don’t know, what you don’t understand and what you don’t own!
So let’s go in a bit deeper. When you were a child you saw images that made various impressions on you. I know I did too. I can only assume that with a balanced up-bringing someone explained reality to you. They told you that you couldn’t be Superman and that if you wanted to be a cowboy you needed to live on a ranch and that carrying six shooters looking for bad guys wasn’t the same as it was on TV (it looked just a little bit differently).
Once again that’s also surface…what about behaviors and the reality about personality, talents, spirituality, hard work, savings, etc. Did you get that crash course at home or in your first 8 yrs of developmental education? I know most did not…even with a balanced family life. If you were fortunate enough to have the security of a 2 parent up-bringing that may have been the most important aspect of those golden years.
So then you know with our single parents, and dysfunctional starts (alcoholic families, drug addicted families) it was even less likely to get that solid and realistic understanding of how things worked in the real world. Can you see why many of us are still a little off center in regards to knowing who we are?
It may come to the point of accepting that those first 7 – 8 years of life are over and you’re expected to know right from wrong with no excuses. Within the next ten to fifteen years you will experience hurt feelings, you will experience failures, and you may have had a few successes, but it’s on you! Yep, it’s on you to determine what direction, how fast or how slow you move in life.
I tell the young people in my audiences all the time. You don’t have the luxury of being carefree. That was a thing of the past. There’s extremely little time for G.I. Joe and Barbie. The world is waiting to suck you up and spit you out if you have no sense of direction. Kids are taking algebra in 6th and 7th grade these days, if not younger.
When all of the noise and chatter has been quieted (if it ever does),
What do you think about?
Where do you want to go?
Who do you want to be with?
What do you want to do?
Who do you long to be with?
The answer to these questions are the clues to who you really are. There is more, but these answers will help you to become more fulfilled than ever. They will help shape you and the direction which is an identifying factor. The other part of that puzzle is the personality (DISC Assessment) type that is associated with each question.
