I recently shared some insight on a 25 plus year education as an entrepreneur and I probably should have shared it long ago. I seem to become more conscious about the tough lessons that life has taught me. I think many of us walk around on autopilot and we simply do not get it.
Get what…I thought you’d never ask. We don’t get the fact that we have to be much more dialed into life than we realize. Theoretically it seems obvious, but literally or practically we’re sort of moonwalking all day and we think we can change the music anytime we want and it doesn’t work that way.
No matter what industry, profession or career path you’re on, you need to be fully aware of everything that goes into making that choice work. You need to be able to recognize where you are in the process as much as possible. It’s not about throwing up a website and sharing your link all day.
It’s like the sports analogy that I layout for kids when I speak. I let them know that simple math can tell them whether they will be a professional athlete or not. My talk to them explains that if there are 20 schools in your neighborhood…add up all of the neighborhoods in your county, your region, and the state and multiply those numbers times 20.
I let them know that is what they are up against and it’s the same for you and I. Even to make a general living we’ve got to have a little something extra that is not so little. Consistency is ultimately needed, but even that doesn’t secure your spot.
You have also got to spend. If it’s college or a trade school…after you get that loan on trumped-up interest, they want their money back. If its a less corporate oriented path then you’ll be going to conferences, buying books, CD’s, DVD’s and attending workshops. It adds up.
Your time will be required. So, once again, expect to do a lot when you don’t feel like it. Your competition will always be in the process of beating you to the punch! You have to give and receive support … did I mention when you don’t feel like it? We must choose wisely as it relates to what direction you want to go in and what is it that you truly love doing.
