(This write up is an excerpt from my forth coming book: ALIGNED BY DESIGN)
Many times we find ourselves in positions where we know that it takes a lot to back track our steps and determine how we positioned ourselves to be in our current situation. I mean you either went to school or didn’t and you look at your career and you try to make sense of the choices you made.
Sometimes it’s your personal life and you’ve said dang, how did a date turn into a relationship, or how did a date turn into children and unforeseen responsibilities? Ask yourself how many times you’ve tried to figure out your life’s GPS pattern and as quickly as you thought of it, you were distracted and forgot about until the next time.
This is all about you and it’s all about me. How do we turn things around? This is critically important if you’ve developed habits for twenty years or more and you’re saying to yourself and to friends…where did the time go! It’s game time folks. It’s now or never and you have got to choose. Are you going to exist or live?
Facing these challenges with a mentor is always easier if you are willing to do the work (turning your life around). Let’s just say we’d like to try a novice idea and you are going to rely on good old YOU! Here are some ideas that might make sense to you and all you have to do is read this write up and decide where to start, why you’re starting and truly make it happen for the home team!
Most people don’t like change so as simple as this is…don’t expect it to be easy. If you’re a truth fighter you may have a better chance at taking advantage of these insights! If you’re an A-Type personality you too might fair well at these suggestions. Now it’s not to say that there is no other personality type that can take responsibility of their life and create change, but it just takes so much.
My personality at it’s core is reserved and humble. I’m the low key guy who wants to break out and be something special, but I’m concerned with getting it right and how people receive me. That’s me at my core. Turning things around for that descriptive person (me) is like a serious long shot (20-1). So imagine how much greater the challenge was when I became a substance abuser.
In my mind I was done. There was absolutely no way to win, no way to turn anything around. For over 25 years I became dependent on alcohol and mind altering substances. This actually affected my character and my values. I abused the humble version of myself.
You may know people like this yourself. When they were young they were one way and when they became adults, or when they started working in a particular industry, or when they were introduced to a different group of people (good or bad) they became different. After almost 3 decades of poor choices and poor living…I can finally accept that I’m a better version of my once low key and humble self.
Now, let’s have at it. The first thing to do is easy.
ACKNOWLEDGE
Are you willing and able to acknowledge that you have a problem or simply do not want to be where you are in life? That can be realizing that you don’t know what got you there, but you do know that you don’t want to stay where your realization has you.
ADMIT
It may help to write it, to actually say it out loud or confide in someone that this is a challenge for you. When you admit things and you’re totally honest about them, it can be sobering. These 2 steps are important, but now the real work begins.
