I watched Will Smith’s movie Concussion several months after it’s release because many viewpoints were that it wasn’t that good. I don’t know why or how I allowed the opinions of others to influence my perspective. As I watched this movie about football players and the short comings they suffer as a result head blows and a world famous full contact sport…I realized how similar it
was to real life.
Let’s look at the definition of the word concussion.
Concussion:
- A hard jolt : shock.
- An injury of a soft structure, especially of the brain, resulting from a violent blow
Many of the concussions in life are disguised as:
Addictions, Disappointments, Heartbreak, Worry, Insecurity Loss Opportunity
How many times have you been knocked out or suffered a concussion when someone told you that you couldn’t do it?
How many times did you think that you were wasting your time when you were not encouraged to start a business?
How many times did you want to try out for a team or a mastermind, but you didn’t think that you had something to offer?
That was one thing. Another thing that led me to understand the importance of the concussions of life was a few stats that I picked up from Amy Orr-Ewing. I listened to Amy as I prepared my presentation deck for a keynote in Corpus Christi. She made some very interesting points from a spiritual perspective, but I suddenly realize that it was relative to daily life. I began to listen closer and I was amazed at how we aren’t usually aligned to being our best.
EDUCATION & TRAINING ALONE WILL NOT TAKE YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GO — AMY ORR-EWING
FOCUS ALIGNMENT
40% – Things that won’t happen
30% – On the past that cannot be changed
12% – Other people’s criticism which is usually untrue
10% – Health (which may decline)
8% – ON REAL CONCERNS
Knocking ourselves out has got to be number one! I still remember hearing as a teenager that we only use 10% of the brains capacity. I’m not quite sure that’s true today with all of the social media and technology around us, but just imagine if the number has doubled or tripled (20 – 30%). That leaves a whopping 70 -80% of untapped potential. Can you imagine what your life can be like if you were disciplined enough to sacrifice a year on an idea that you really believe in?
