It’s either a bold statement of there’s more behind it. When you think of the criteria needed to be entitled to something you consider so many different things. To think that the very thing used to measure a persons worth (their qualifications) may not be enough seems ludicrous .
For years we use qualifications as the measuring stick to know if you should or shouldn’t be allowed in a given profession, sport or industry. I feel it only makes sense that someone is tested, but in the big scheme of things their are unconventional methods that are being used every day.
You have #1 the good old boys approach, you have the #2 attractive persons approach and you have the #3 I don’t know how to interview people well syndrome. Number 1 simply means that if you know someone…that can be your in. That’s not always a bad thing, but if you don’t have a brain in your head. The bad thing is that you don’t have a brain in your head and even if you mess up you still may not even have to face consequences.
Number 2, at times it may be ok to get the hook up, but not consistently. How many people have been overlooked for jobs or opportunities based solely on appearance? We do live in a superficial world, so can you imagine how many people will either remain out of work or take jobs that don’t match their skill set mainly because someone else was hired based on looks or being hooked up by a friend or colleague.
Number 3…what about the interviewer or supervising manager that doesn’t know how to do their jobs well and they screen people in an ineffective manner, and as a result they are bringing the wrong people on board. These are just a few examples of when qualifications don’t even get a chance to be considered. Adding qualifications to any of the aforementioned scenarios greatly enhances any team even when things are done out of skew.
The core message is to know what you bring to the table and really be able to hold your own (speak up for your self). Once again there is no harm in knowing the right people or even in being an attractive person, but BE QUALIFIED!
