Ever since I became a professional speaker and trainer I’ve had either a mentor or a coach. A grand total of no less than 12 over the years. some I’ve stayed with and some where just experiences.
Is your coach always right…tough question isn’t it? Don’t get caught up in a hissie fit (is that a word LOL).
The truth of the matter is depends on your coach and how committed you are to the process…for the most part.
Ok, let’s deal with first things first. Did you seek a coach or did your coach solicit you?
It doesn’t have to matter, but if the timing is right and that happens to be what you need, this must be taken into consideration. If you are / were just curious about coaches…then maybe its not such a big deal. Who uses coaches?
At some point or another I think we all might use a mentor, trainer or coach.
In our personal lives it may not be as common, but in our professional lives the stakes are higher and its more likely that at some point during this facet of life we may need a coach. I’m talking about a fitness coach (trainer), financial coach, mental health coach (psychiatrist / psychologist), or a business coach (personal development /business development).
#1 be honest why you’ve decided to work with him / her
#2 are you committed
#3 do they have experience
#4 what’s their track record
#5 how many people are they currently working with
#6 is it / will it be an ongoing situation (or short term and the relationship is done)
#7 do you like him / her (chemistry)
#8 do they like you (chemistry)
#9 are they experienced in your specific area of need
#10 would you also recommend them (him / her)
There can be several other things to consider but let’s just say for this blog, the list of 10 is enough to get you started on some initial considerations.
Let’s acknowledge the fact that you have life experience and you have knowledge about your situation, you just don’t know everything. You know what’s in your head, but not other points of view.
Your coach has been coaching, speaking, maybe writing for some time (in an ideal situation) and they appealed to you and have begun giving you assignments or sharing a mindset that you are not comfortable with.
SO WHAT’S NEXT?
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
- Your coach may be getting under your skin with tactics that you are not familiar with so you need to at least try what they are suggesting.
- You need to give it your all.
- If you feel uneasy (talk about it).
You don’t want to take a half hearted approach and not get favorable results. After all you have vetted them and that’s why you’re moving forward.
Let’s say for instance they tell you something and it doesn’t work! Oh my, this is a possibility, but not the end of the world. Remember your coach is human and so are you. You simply re-strategize. You don’t want to be a baby about everything, so make good use out of each session.
Write down issues and concerns, so that you can really maximize the purpose of having a coach. The bottom line is that everyone can be wrong, but when a coach is a subject matter expert…it’s their job not to be. Who knows you may learn enough one day to become a coach yourself! On my reality show The Keynote, there was some serious yet diverse coaching with the various cast mates and myself.
Every person doesn’t get coached the same way. Some people have to be pushed and some have to be patted.
