In Toastmasters we do 2 minute speeches (Table Topics). They’re off the cuff talks. This is a great way to be creative and prepare to speak on unexpected topics. It will also serve you in your area of expertise…you just have to be innovative with your thinking, so that you’d know how to bounce back.
Spontaneous topics are good for more than just speaking. It will serve your thinking and support you with knowing how to purpose events, products and services. A good example would be the time I rented a hotel for an event and had an underwhelming turnout. In the past I would have been emotionally blown out, but as a professional of any type you have to learn how to make something good out of everything that you do.
In business you have to be ready for the good, the bad and the in between. There is no full proof industry, profession or area of expertise.
You may wonder what did I do that was so creative with my underwhelming event. That’s easy…first of all I knew for the most part (not completely) it was my fault for not promoting it properly. There always has to be a fair balance of Hi-Tech and Hi-Touch. That means you have to meet people face to face, you have to express how important what you’re offering is. On the technology side you need good graphics and above all you have to be consistent.
There is also another component I left out…it doesn’t always matter how good you are…you’ve gotta do what the O’Jays sing about. You’ve got to give the people what they want! So, although everything above is true I’m fortunate that I have my own everything as far as equipment is concerned. So I miked up, I turned on the cameras and the lights and instantly I recorded a session that will be an on-line training for customers and clients that I may not be able to get to in real time or for clients that prefer on-line training.
There is not specific time frame for coming up with options. The sooner the better, but it’s really about having them or creating them versus not having them at all. The key is to figure out how many ways can you execute or repurpose your event, your service or your product…if needed or WHEN NEEDED!
