When we become adults we will continuously learn and evolve, but we aren’t necessarily experts at any particular subject. It has been said to become an expert you need at least 10,000 hours of study and experience. So, let’s start out with the obvious, but also the obviously over looked fact. No matter what lane you’re in…everyone brings something to the table. I’m talking bout a viewpoint or an opinion.
For the past few weeks I’ve been writing about coaching because not only do I have one, but I am one. This week I’m focusing on an area that my coach wanted me to be better at. I’ve worked with Delatorro McNeal, II significantly in the last couple of years, mainly because of The Keynote reality show and because I respect the guy and I like the way he does business!
I began traveling around the country back in 2005. Wherever the gig was I’d find myself there, so as stated above I bring something to the table and to the profession overall. My personality is easy going and sort of reserved. What did I learn? Although every speaker has their style, so does every coach.
I’d like to point out that Delatorro is a speakers coach. I can’t think of a speaker that knows him, that wouldn’t have kind words for him. Now on the other hand I’d say the same for speakers that he’s either coached or mentored. Truly a beloved coach, but his style is his style.
Back to the learned lesson. He taught me that although I have technique (stage presence, vocal variety and things of that nature) I can really boost my presentation by adding energy and emotion.
Those are two separate components.
- Energy is essential to involving your audience, it’s essential to emphasis of a point, it’s essential in generating interest also.
- Now emotion was also a point of emphasis. Once again, you cannot confuse energy and emotion. Emotion is painting that picture that tells the story and literally making the audience FEEL what you’re conveying.
When I sang with my band, I’d have to remind myself to FEEL the lyrics. Anytime I’d FEEL the lyrics, the songs was intensified and the audience was really connected because of it.
